Another Pedigree Tale (Woof Woof)

Another Pedigree Tale (Woof Woof)

Not long ago on a hot July afternoon, I sat gazing out a dingy little window at the A.S.P.C.A., wondering what the cruel world had in store for me. Years of honest toil had slowed my once-vital limbs – and I didn’t have so much as a collar to call my own. Nor a single friend to vouch for my fabulous personality.

But I guess that’s the thing about new best friends… you just don’t know when they’re about to walk through the door.

Debbie had travelled to her local A.S.P.C.A. from Community Access, in search of a companion. She was real sad at the time, and still reeling from some awful blows, including the death of her best friend – her husband – and then losing her home.

Community Access was Debbie’s new home, but I could tell she was lonely. That’s why she signed up for Pet Access, the very first chance she got. I found out about it later, it’s Community Access’ pet adoption and therapy program.

The man in charge of Pet Access helped Debbie find me – and I’ve been by her side ever since! We’re best friends.

Every day, Debbie and I try to stay busy. At sunrise I’m the first to wake up. Yipeeeee! I run and jump into her bed and do what I can to help her wake up too.

About 9 in the morning, I hear a knock on the door. I know who it is, but… you know the drill. I bark and I bark and I bark. It’s really just my way of saying to our home health aide, “Hi Carol!”

After breakfast we sally forth to say good morning to our friends in the building. I am rather popular so I must allocate a few hours a day for my social responsibilities. Most days I have a snack with Mrs. S down the hall, then wander across the way to see Jerry and his cat. (That cat sure likes to sleep…)

In the afternoon – after lunch and a nap, naturally – we usually go to play in the park. I especially enjoy running around with the big scary-looking dogs. I was meant to be one myself, but somehow I wound up small and cute instead.

Back from the park, me and Debbie have an hour or so to catch our breath. I’m rather short, so a ride in Debbie’s wheelchair is a great way to see things higher up. That’s the best because I love sitting in her lap too.

Time for bed yet, you’re thinking? Almost. First, I simply have to count my doggy treats and toys. I like to keep good care of them, just like Debbie looks after me. And second, one last walk down to the lobby. There’s so much going on in our building, I don’t want to miss anything!

Lately I’ve been helping with the Christmas tree. There are lots of decorations, all shiny and bright.

Ok, night, night Debbie. I love you. xox
