Where Did You Grow Up?

For the Fall/Winter 2019 issue of C magazine, we sat down with some tenants at CA's new building on East 172nd Street — to ask a few friendly questions...

Where did you live before moving in?
On Stanton Street, [in Community Access transitional housing] in Manhattan. It was nice.

How do you like your new place?
It’s beautiful. I love it.

 Favorite food?
Spanish food—pastilles. They are meat pies. My parents made them for me. It’s a popular Spanish dish that Puerto Ricans eat.

How do you like to relax?
Staying home and reading the Bible.

Where did you live before moving in?
I lived at East Broadway. That’s one of the [Community Access transitional housing] buildings in the Lower East Side. I was there for a bit over two and a half years.

How do you like your new place?
I love it. I’m spreading my wings again. I’m breathing again. I’m not congested. Is that a good word for it? I’m happy. I’m happy. That’s what it is. I’m happy.

Famous person you'd like to meet?
Stephen Colbert. I’ve been a big fan of his for a long time. I used to watch him when he was on Comedy Central, on the Colbert Report. Now he’s on the Late Show. I watch him every night at 11:35 on channel 2, religiously. He’s very funny, and he’s very truthful. He doesn’t hold back, he doesn’t hold punches. I like that about him. There’s no fakeness to him.

 Best thing about NYC?
Everything, everything, I’m a straight-up New Yorker. Born and raised. I’ve been to a lot of places, I’ve moved out of state before, but I’ve always ended up back in New York. I just love it here.

Where did you live before moving in?
A cousin’s apartment on 162nd Street in the Bronx.

How do you like your new place?
Well, I don’t know how to explain it. It’s amazing — that’s all I can say. What I have been through in my life — I was homeless for sure time — to have a place to live... God bless America. That is all I can say. God bless America. And only in America, can something like that happen.

 Where did you grow up?
The countryside in Ghana. I moved to New York when I was 19 or 20.

Famous person you'd like to meet?
The president. The one who’s in charge right now – or a different president in the future.

Where did you live before moving in?
I think I was at Bronx State. I had to do that so I could live here.

How do you like your new place?
I enjoy it. I bought some dish-washing, some sponges, some soda and milk... And my sister’s bringing me a couch soon. A big couch.

 Where did you grow up?
Colombia.

Do you think people will ever live on Mars?
No. It's too complicated.
