Community Access, home of Blueprint Supported Education, hosted New York City’s first ever Supported Education Symposium.

Held on May 28, 2019, the event focused on promoting equity in access to education, as well as developing supports for students with histories mental health concerns and students with criminal justice involvement. The Symposium welcomed over 150 attendees in-person at Community Access' main office and online, and featured a packed line-up of presentations, workshops, a panel discussion, and a strategic planning session.

Representatives from ImpulSE – founders of the European Network on Supported Education (ENSed) – presented a keynote on the development of their network, and suggested strategies for launching a similar network in New York. Since the Symposium, the NYC Supported Education Network has been formed.

  • Professor Lies Korevaar from Hanze University, The Netherlands, kicked off the day with his keynote address, "Building a Supported Education Network: Lessons Learned in Europe."
  • Representatives of Blueprint presented on the complex intersection of mental health and the criminal justice system, and the role Supported Education can play in overcoming some of the challenges faced by individuals with a history of involvement in both.
  • The day concluded with small group discussions that reflected on the insights from the keynote address and identified the key issues involved in creating a local Supported Education network. NYC's Supported Education Network has since been launched.
