Since 1988, East Village Access has filled an important niche for people who have had their lives disrupted by mental illness and need the support of others who believe that recovery from illness is possible. East Village Access has been the "open door" to thousands of people seeking some of life's most basic amenities, like friendship, new skills, more education, a hot meal, dignity and creative expression.
East Village Access provides a structured, point of entry for programs and services operated by both Community Access and its colleagues in the community. All East Village Access members are expected to take an active role in running the "business" of the program, and our staff-to-member ratio is kept deliberately low to facilitate this process.
Among the multitude of member-driven programs and services that East Village Access offers are:
- Educational workshops, including professional development support, personal wellness, and exercise workshops
- Skills and job training programs such as basic administrative skills and data entry workshops, record keeping workshops, the Career Club, and job readiness training;
- Transitional employment opportunities
- Events, including intramural sports, game and movie nights, trips to museums and special holiday events;
- Access to services such as emergency healthcare, counseling and psychiatric care, Medicaid, Social Security income and food stamps
